French port and naval station at the northern
end of the Cotentin peninsula, in Manche
departement; population (1982) 85,500
(conurbation). There is an institute for
studies in nuclear warfare, and Cherbourg has
large shipbuilding yards. During World War
II, Cherbourg was captured June 1944 by the
Allies, who thus gained their first large
port of entry into France. Cherbourg was
severely damaged; restoration of the harbour
was completed 1952. There is a nuclear
processing plant at nearby Cap la Hague.
There are ferry links to Southampton,
Weymouth, and Rosslare.
